In 1778, during the War of Independence, the Marine Corps Rose was dedicated to those Marines who made the Ultimate Sacrifice for their country. This tradition was continued by the French during World War One when the Marines attacked the Germans in the trenches at Beleau Wood. Roses were planted by the grateful French people at the graves of the fallen Marines. When and where ever you see Marine Corps League members distributing these remembrances, take and wear one proudly.
Started by Marine Eddie Gallagher from New York, the Roses Program is designed to parallel the VFW "Poppy" program in order to provide funds for MCL Detachments to assist veterans, and youth, and provide other services to the community.
- Health and comfort items for hospitalized veterans.
- Support programs such as Bingo or Holiday Parties for hospitalized or retired veterans in retirement homes, etc.
- Scholarships
- Assist youth programs
- Humanitarian Aid
Unicoi Detachment #783 proudly provides this program to Towns and Union County.

It is the goal of Unicoi Detachment #783 to recognize and honor every honorably discharged Marine that falls within Towns and Union County. We are honored to present the Fallen Marine Program for ALL current, or honorably discharged, Marines and offer our condolences to their families. Our Marines have earned this honor and deserve for it to be done in a professional manner without any cost. The program normally takes place at the deceased Marine’s viewing. It is not a graveside ceremony.
How do I request the Fallen Marine Ceremony?
1. Contact the Funeral Director and request this ceremony. The funeral home director will work directly with Detachment #783.
Or
2. Contact a Detachment #783 Fallen Marine Coordinator directly:

Who is eligible for the Fallen Marine Program?
o Honorably Discharged Marines
o Honorably Discharged Fleet Marine Force Navy Personnel
o Active Duty & Reserve Marines
o Active Duty & Reserve Fleet Marine Force Navy Personnel
·
How long is the Fallen Marine Program?
o The entire program lasts about 10 minutes.
·
When should I notify the MCL of the passing of my Marine?
o As soon as possible. Even if the viewing/funeral details are not yet complete. It is important to give our detachment enough time to muster the troops to attend the service.
o Pre-notification of a Marine in hospice is ok. Sometimes a final visit from Marines to their dying brother or sister is possible. They are always a moving experience for everyone involved.
When will the MCL perform the Fallen Marine Program?
o The service is typically performed at the viewing but can be performed at another time if requested.
MCL Detachment #783 & USMC Coordination
o Every Fallen Marine deserves full Military Honors. The Funeral Director should contact the United States Marine Corps (USMC) to request an Official Burial Detail.
o The USMC Burial Detail usually comprises 3 Active-Duty Marines (2 Flag Folders and a Bugler).
o The Detail normally attends the final burial at the cemetery. If the Marine will be cremated and there is no burial, then the USMC detail will attend the viewing.
The MCL Fallen Marine Program is meant to compliment the USMC Detail, NOT replace it.
The Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF) provides critically needed support to disabled and at-risk veterans who leave the military wounded—physically or psychologically—after defending our safety and our freedom.
